The Met Gala is always full of breathtaking gowns and major celebrities. But behind all of it lies a hidden Indian story that few people know. For the 2026 event, the famous red carpet that stars walked on was once again carefully handmade in Kerala. It may seem like a simple carpet to many but it actually carries the hard work and skill of several Indian artisans. Read on to know more about it.

As per reports, this is the fourth time Neytt by Extraweave has made the main carpet for the Met Gala. This year, they created a clean, off-white carpet using natural fibres. Creating this special carpet is no small task. The team starts by carefully hand-sorting strong sisal fibres shipped all the way from Madagascar. These fibres are then woven into a soft yet sturdy fabric that can handle thousands of footsteps without losing its charm.

For the 2026 Met Gala, the workers in Kerala prepared 57 huge rolls. Each one measured four metres wide and 30 metres long, which adds up to a massive 6,840 square metres. The entire process begins in the small town of Cherthala in the Alleppey district before the carpets make their long journey across the ocean to New York.
