Mary Quant, the British fashion designer, who was responsible for giving miniskirts a colourful twist in the 1960s has breathed her last. She was 93 years old, and was known for revolutionizing miniskirts and hotpants as a must-have outfit in your closet. Her designs and patterns caught everyone’s attention in London after the war because she incorporated bright colours and fancy fabrics in the outfits she designed.
As per reports, Mary Quant was in her Surrey home when she passed away peacefully. Born on February 11, 1930, Mary Quant wanted to study fashion but her parents did not encourage her. She, then, graduated with an art education degree. But her love for fashion was just as vivid as the outfits she late came to make. She became an apprentice to a hatmaker in Brooke Street.
Mary Quant went on to launch her own boutique which she named Bazaar. She was very clear with the revision about the kind of clothes she wanted to design for women – they should be colourful and modern. And that is how miniskirts were born. Miniskirts went on to become a huge rage in the 1960s because of Quant, and her designs of them remain iconic even today.
Quant’s fashion was at its peak during the Swinging Sixties era in the United Kingdom. Reportedly, the idea behind the outfits she designed was that it should be easy for women to move, run and jump in the clothes. Quant was also quoted saying that she would customise the length of the outfit as per the customer’s need and desire.
