Fusion dressing is Indian designers’ new way of finding that sweet spot between cultures and contemporary aesthetics. This innovative way of experimenting with powerful designs is visible through structured shoulders, and edgy cuts in jackets. From poetic embroideries, and floral appliqués to collars, jackets are a new favourite in celebrity closets. Making its way in especially Indian ethnic wear, celebrities like–Sonam Kapoor, Pooja Hegde and Hina Khan have already been displaying their love for this new addition. So, if just like these actresses, you wanna add a jacket to your ethnic look, here’s how you can do so!
Sonam Kapoor’s Maharaja Chic
For a recent event, actress Sonam Kapoor trusted her favourite designer duo–Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, to dress herself up. On Kapoor, we spotted a kalidaar jumpsuit, teamed with a handcrafted jacket. The beauty of the silhouette was visible in the thread-work and intricately embedded mirrors that spoke about the brand’s signature grandeur. What added to the look was Sonam’s choice of oxidised jewellery, especially the match between her winged eyeliner and a pair of ear cuffs. There’s no doubt about the show-stopping appearance of the jacket, but what catches the eye is how Sonam brings a sense of menswear tailoring to complete her kalidaar. This refreshing combination is bold and equally versatile.
Karisma Kapoor’s Saree Show
Taking the combination of a saree and jacket, way ahead was actress Karisma Kapoor in one of her recent photoshoots. In pictures, we spotted Kapoor wearing a romantic rose saree, embellished with dirty white embroidery and silver sequins that twinned with her choice of jewellery. The classic silhouette by designer Anamika Khanna highlighted her back, shoulders and waist with understated embroidery and rich hues. Something like this will serve as the perfect purchase for shoppers who love pastels.
Mrunal Thakur And The Silk Style
A keeper of modern-day heirlooms, Mrunal Thakur has an eye for rich Indian embroideries and veteran fabrics that remind her of the country’s heritage. Through colours and contemporary cuts, she often sits down with her stylists to curate a well-defined look, with elaborate layering. In some of her recently posted pictures on her Instagram, we spotted a striking colour play between royal blue and sunny yellow. The brocade jacket in this context was Thakur’s tribute to the royal silk, which is known to be a winter favourite. The design indeed made a statement, and can be recreated, if silk remains a love at first sight for you!
Pooja Hegde’s Summer Shaadi Favourite
Next in the list is actress Pooja Hegde, who enjoys fashion, that is fuss-free and doesn’t come at the cost of her comfort. In her very own way, she tried her hands at the jacket trend, with this Ridhima Bhasin design. The festive set on Hegde, featured an ivory choli, a pair of white-legged pants and the designer’s signature scalloped sleeveless jacket. Perfect to wear at a summer wedding, the set is easy to style and the jacket makes a case for bold yet understated glam.
Hina Khan’s Moody Blazer
Unlike the many designs we mentioned in this list, Hina Khan stood out like she always does. Bringing a unique, fresh perspective to the trend, was her two-faced blazer. The moulded design by designer Mini Sondhi gave a unique twist to a regular, formal blazer, and brought ethnic thread work and pattern into play. The visible contrast between western pants and the bold face design on the shoulders took statement-making to another level, something we definitely wanna try out too.

Diana Penty’s Spin On The Ghaghara
It was back in the late 70s and early 90s when we saw the rise of designer jackets. And evoking a similar nostalgia is actress Diana Penty, who loaned some inspiration from the past to provide a twist to her lehenga. The colour-blocked design by Anita Dongre, featured a flouncy skirt, teamed with a slim choli. She layered the look with a fitted, crop jacket with mono sleeves. The intense ice-blue and red embroidery on the base, and well-rounded edges of the jacket complimented her athletic form and provided a unique twist to the lehenga. If you’re someone who isn’t sure of floor-sweeping lengths, this tiny, embroidered jacket will be a perfect choice for you.
So, what’s your pick?
