From Celebrity Drama To Missing Trends, Fashion Had A Major FOMO At FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week

The past few days from March 13 to 17 turned host to India’s most prestigious fashion week. The latest and first season of FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week of 2024 just departed from our Instagram screens, and let’s just say we have a lot of thoughts. The action-packed week squeezed in trends, glamour, glistening celebrity entourage, front-row elitism and whatnot. What went missing was the fashion from Fashion Week. Paying homage to coquette core, and the classic Indian silhouettes were a few designer collections, while the rest stuck to the usual.

Paving the way were a few of my favourite designers like Urvashi Kaur, Gaurang Shah, Siddartha Tytler, and Chola The Label, who strutted the runway with extraordinary set designs, tea party, well-crafted creations, fabric play, and season-specific fashion for celebratory occasions. Festive wear infused with laid-back street style was at the core of it all. But the rest, settled for predictable fashion, backed up by poetic mood boards and storylines. Here’s what didn’t sit well with us at the newest season of FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week.

The Starry Showstoppers

The Bollywood-ification of fashion continued to display its roaring potential on the runway. Like a little birdy, we observed stardom dethroning designers from their seats this season again. The highlight for many shows were these popular celebrity names, who with their tantrums and face cards, entered and exited the showcase in a hot minute. These names walked the runway with their charm drawing attention to the show, and blabbered their pre-learnt script about their showstopping look. With little if not more spotlight given to the actual artists–designers, media and audiences flocked like cattle behind these celebrities to play the THIS or THAT and rapid fires embed–*hypocrite laugh*

Gowns And Glitch Galore

Some of India’s most glorious, powerful designer houses returned to the ramp, with a reprised, unsurprising approach to their signature silhouettes. One amongst the many were designers Gauri And Nainika, who returned with a plethora of their classic gowns. Florals packaged with dark feminine energy, lasted for a lifetime, as we witnessed the slowest show of the season. The usual gowns were presented with glitches galore, as models faced deadly falls and experienced an uncomfortable walk, with heels lost in the floor-sweeping trails. It was then, the selling point of comfort left the chat.

Tokenism At Best

Inclusivity was sprinkled like a handful of freshly chopped coriander in a tadka garnishing a hot pot of dal. Keeping a few model rosters like Urvashi Kaur’s aside, celebrity designers invited just one plus-size model to their showcases, for the sake of tokenism. Like most seasons, it was their way to say “We care, but we actually don’t.”

Lustre-Less Lehengas

The sad display of festive fashion was sponsored through bothersome Indian designs, spoiled by those who are reigning kings and queens of this category. The display at Varun Chakkilam, and Anushree Reddy amongst the rest, included a lustre-less usual formula of flowers, sequins and low-cut blouses, with a serious lack of innovation and individuality. We waited for new flavours of designs, fabric construction and cuts, but our cravings were left unattended.

Maybe, this time in fashion is build up to a crucial change, a slight change in culture, curated trends, and new faces to now enter the spotlight. Nevertheless, we’re seated with hope in the next season.
