“I Didn’t Wanna Look Intimidating By The Way I Dressed,” Masaba Gupta On Building The Sartorial Mood Of ‘Masaba Masaba 2’ With Stylist Mohit Rai

And spilling more beans on it, designer Masaba Gupta herself shared with us some interesting details about this year’s costumes. Styled by popular celebrity stylist–Mohit Rai and his team, this season will take you through a colourful sartorial journey, with a fresh range of looks sported by the star cast.

In conversation with Hauterrfly, Masaba shared, “So we had Mohit Rai, who I personally requested to style this season because I really liked his work, and I like his team as well. Having one good stylist is great, but their team needs to be equally efficient. My brief by the way is not just for me, but for every character on the show, I sit with a mood board and I’m like, what will this person look like, even when they’re sleeping? And I do think that in season one, while I was a lot more laid back, it was a lot more casual, in season two, you see a very marked difference in the costume for everyone.”

She further added, “I just think the brief for me was that, “listen, don’t make me intimidating by the way I dress.” I think that’s the number one brief because what happens is when you see characters who are always beautifully turned out with the perfect hair and makeup in the perfect costume, perfect shoes, you’re like wow I can’t, I can’t approach them. I can’t touch that. I can’t feel that. The beauty of the show is that people feel like they know me. So I want people to also feel like they continue to know me or get to know me with the way I dress as well.”

Talking further about her specific costume brief, Masaba mentioned, “The brief was not to go over the top, but still keep it fashion. And I think otherwise, I’m somebody who has always worn a new brand in India or the world. I wear established brands, I’ll wear a Gucci suit but also a piece from a young kid who just started working out of his garage. So I think that I always told Mohit, that let’s keep a steady mix of Indian designers largely and we throw in a few global brands once in a while. Given that, I run my own fashion label, a healthy balance of House of Masaba with some homegrown brands, was the brief. Not to make it like an advertisement for House of Masaba but a nice healthy balance.”

Well, Masaba sure is someone who reflects a strong personal style, that isn’t just a replica of her label–House Of Masaba. Her closet aesthetic speaks about her persona which is distinct from her creations for the label. And with Mohit Rai joining the show this year, Masaba Masaba 2‘s fashion quotient has surely gone a notch up.

Masaba Masaba 2 has finally arrived on Netflix. Besides Masaba Gupta, and Neena Gupta, the show also features actors Neil Bhoopalam, Barkha Singh, social media stars Kusha Kapila and Kareema Barry.
