Fishnets Are Tacky. Why Are Celebs And Designers Rooting For Its Return?
Fishnet, you coming? Mat aao please!

The bold, but not-so-appealing fishnets are back for another round. Serving the purpose of innerwear, fishnets much like corsets remained layers, and layers beneath a gorgeous gown in the 19th century. This highly sexualised piece of clothing today is often coupled with tiny skater skirts and used as a patch for tailor-made tops. For designers, the newest edition of fishnets has found a spot in face masks, detachable sleeves, and innerwear for blazers.

This return has brought the trending mesh fabric into a new light. On celebrities, and the fashion runways, fishnets are arriving in a million new flavours. While some come cropped out into patches, some others feature a rhinestone overlay. Dividing buyers into two opinions that either support this trend or revolt against it, I myself signed up for the latter. But what makes it a controversial clothing accessory is its limiting nature. In a world where shoppers are looking for ageless designs, and versatile clothing options, fishnets box themselves.

As we trace its existence in history, and art, fishnets have remained an integral part of stage costumes, sexualised for the idea of flesh-flashing. A piece used for excessive layering, fishnets slowly trickled down to punk. But sadly, it never found a space in everyday wear. And if you ask me to wear them beneath my distressed denim, I’d say, no thanks! This tacky trend makes it a tedious task for many to style it. If not worn right, fishnets can push you towards a horrible look. At times, the fabric might confuse you about the occasion, and event you style it for.

A dear piece to occasion dressing, fishnets are slowly finding love from most celebrity closets. Loving the mesh fabric in every form, and shade actress is Radhika Apte. For the promotions of her latest Netflix release–Monica O My Darling, Radhika welcomed fishnet through a Shivan and Naresh, multimedia, mesh-patch top. Taking the see-through trend a little too ahead was Radhika’s mesh bodycon, styled with a deep green pantsuit.
In terms of celebrity takers of the trend, Ananya Panday too styled a sultry pair of mesh stockings with a multicoloured sweater. Other versions of fishnet have also been making it to the red carpet in formats of gowns, and knitted, see-through dresses, thanks to Megan Fox, and Dua Lipa.
