The charm of Chikankari!
How Athiya Shetty Paid Homage To Culture Veteran Chikankari With Her Bridal Looks

Culture veteran Chikankari embroidery is one of India’s most loved picks in the category of ethnic wear. Going beyond the usual street style kurtas in mesmerising sorbet hues, teamed with a pair of denim jeans, Chikankari has proudly entered the bridal trousseau. This delightful art of tonal thread embroidery has been a favourite choice by newlywed–Athiya Shetty, who selected the embroidery, not just for one but two significant looks from her wedding festivities. One of the first looks that the actress shared with the world, was a beautiful shot of herself and husband–KL Rahul, as they took their wedding vows on the mandap.

Unlike many celebrity brides, who chose a high-octane lehenga to mark the special occasion, Shetty rekindled our love for pastel bridal lehenga, with her vintage, rose Chikankari lehenga by designer Anamika Khanna. Styled by celebrity stylist–Ami Patel, Shetty trusted Khanna’s signature Chikankari work, which met the brilliance of gold Zardozi for her bridal look. The actress’ full-sleeved blouse replicated the jarl-work on her lehenga and sealed the look with a scalloped dupatta, that covered a portion of her head like a veil. This understated glam of Chikankari was adorned with a statement polki drop neckpiece, a dainty maangtika and earrings.

Shetty elevated the look with sun and star-laden kaleera charms by Mrinalini Chandra and presented a slice of her personal style on her special day. Besides picking the Lucknowi-embroidery for her wedding day, the actress chose to dazzle in Chikankari during her mehendi ceremony. In newly released pictures on her Instagram handle, the actress packaged a look with the charm of sun-kissed ivory and vintage heirloom jewellery. Shetty twirled in a custom-made Chikankari lehenga by designer Anjul Bhandari. Bhandari, who is known for making the art forms of Chikankari and Kaamdani, a celebrated couture, marinated the elegance of the Lucknow-born embroidery with twinkling mukaish work. The coming together of shades like off-white and ivory was curated by 12 women artisans over a span of 18 months, as shared by the designer on her Instagram handle.

The do-taar lehenga was further teamed with two dupattas, that took a seat on her shoulders, alongside a full-sleeved slim choli and a 24-kali skirt. The interesting addition to Shetty’s mehendi ensemble was a pair of heirloom chaandbali earrings, which were loaned from her Nani’s (grandmother) jewellery treasure.

The best part about the actress’ mood board for her wedding was her homage to the old-world colour scheme, vintage romance and heirloom accessories that beautifully wrapped her wedding trousseau. For her pre-wedding festivities including the ceremonies of haldi and Muhurtham, Athiya enjoyed a monochromatic gold and ivory palette with a twist of colour play through her Kanjeevaram saree and her gota-work, vintage Ritu Kumar kalidar and gharara skirt.
