Indian Documentary ‘Writing With Fire’ Wins Peabody Award. Director Rintu Thomas Is “Grateful” And We’re Proud!
This is such good news!

Indian cinema is garnering a lot of attention on the international stage lately, and I am so glad to see this happening because it was a long time overdue. At the Oscars 2022, an Indian documentary film titled Writing With Fire was nominated. This film became the first Indian documentary movie to bag an Academy Award nomination. The film tells a strong story of journalists who are the front runners of a woman-led Dalit newspaper. And it is with much pride that I write this that Writing With Fire has won the honourable Peabody Award!

The Indian documentary, Writing With Fire, is directed by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh shared this good news through Twitter. Thomas wrote a short and sweet message on the micro-blogging site saying that the Peabody Award is coming home, and that she is grateful for the recognition.
A Peabody Award is coming home.

For those who do not know much about the film, here are more details. Writing With Fire is about a group of Dalit women who run the newspaper, Khabar Lahariya. The film tells the story of how these women transitioned to the use of smartphones after having worked in print for so many years. Run by the editor of the newspaper, Meera along with her colleague, Suneeta, who is a crime reporter, the film shows the hardships these female journalists face to report harsh facts and truths. It also highlights how the lack of funds does not stop these women from adapting to the digital medium.

Writing With Fire has bagged several prestigious awards to date. It has been recognised at the Belfast Film Festival, San Francisco International Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and more such events! We need more films like these that bring to light the empowering stories of female journalists who can set examples for the young girls who dream of becoming a journalist one day!
Heartiest congratulations to the team of Writing With Fire!
