Paapa Essiedu by his mother, a fashion and design teacher, in Walthamstow, he originally considered a career in medicine. But it was a push from his A-level drama teacher that steered him toward the arts, eventually leading him to the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he crossed paths with Michaela Coel, who would later cast him in the critically acclaimed I May Destroy You. Essiedu’s career began earnestly with the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he impressed audiences in productions like Hamlet and King Lear. He later transitioned into television, gaining recognition in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2016), Kiri (2018), and Press (2018). However, it was his emotionally layered performance as Kwame in I May Destroy You that brought him major accolades, including Emmy and BAFTA nominations.

More recently, he starred in Gangs of London, The Lazarus Project, and Black Mirror: Demon 79, each role showcasing his remarkable range.
