Vidya Balan Recalls Being Bullied At Award Function For Heyy Babyy Costumes, Blames Nepotism. Why Weren’t Director, Stylist Also Targeted?

Nepotism has always been a big issue in the Indian film industry that becomes an obstacle for outsiders. However,  some actors successfully break through their shackles and come out as a winners. Do Aur Do Pyaar star Vidya Balan is one of them,  and she recently shared her story of being treated as an outsider during the initial days of her career. Vidya Balan spoke about the time when she was compelled to accept a Na-Real award for her costumes in Heyy Babyy, and how her reaction to it caused several problems for her later.

Vidya Balan recalled an incident that happened during the Filmfare Awards to discuss how she felt like an outsider. Talking about Nepotism during a podcast Unfiltered With Samdish, Vidya Balan shared that before Filmfare she was informed about getting the Na-Real Award for her costumes in Heyy Babyy. When she refused to accept it, people insisted on her take, added the actress. Vidya Balan also said that she was also asked not to take the director or costume designer’s name. However, Vidya Balan later found out that the person who was supposed to be given the Na-Real award had backed out. Vidya Balan also revealed that despite all she took Manish Malhotra and Sajid Khan’s names during the acceptance speech but was later faced with a backlash in the industry.  As per Vidya, this incident was a strong blow to remind her that she was an outsider.

The Do Aur Do Pyaar actress further added that this incident shattered her and she realised how it feels to not be from a film background.  She said that in the beginning, it all felt like a joke until she realised that it was only her who was being made fun of. She also called the whole incident bullying.

It’s pathetic how people are made to feel this way, and everyone who comes to the industry is not equally strong enough to endure such kind of treatment. One realises more about the situation of the outsiders in the film industry when actors share these kinds of incidents.
