Udta Teer Review: Ayushmann Khurrana, Sara Ali Khan’s Spy-Comedy Delivers Laughs Before Losing Its Charm!
hauterrfly Rating: 2.5 / 5

The trailer for Udta Teer promised us a refreshing spy-comedy starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan in lead roles. I was looking forward to this film directed by Aakash Kaushik, with high expectations. It also stars a talented supporting cast, including Mukul Dev, Gulshan Grover, Rahul Bose, Suhail Nayyar, and Ram Kapoor, among others. However, Udta Teer couldn’t escape the second-half curse. Read our review for more.

Plot

Ayushmann Khurrana’s Bilal Ahmed is a Pakistani spy who is sent to India. He joins the Counter Terrorism Squad, but of course, he is working in the interests of his country. But a series of events leads to Bilal Ahmed losing his memory. His patriotism is intact, but he forgets his own country. This twist leads to a lot of confusion and chaos, which basically makes up the premise of the first half. In the second half, the film has too many twists, and it also takes a serious tone. It becomes less about a spy-spoof and more about patriotism.

What Works

The Comedy

Well, that’s limited to the first half, but Udta Teer’s comedy is refreshing and something quirky, which for most parts is quite enjoyable. The laughter begins with a hilarious Rahul Bose sequence. He definitely left me surprised with his perfect physical comedy. It was a nice break from all the misogyny, body shaming and meme-inspired jokes. In fact, comedy was also delivered by Mukul Dev’s Azhar, an ISI terrorist, and Sandeep Anand, who also plays a Pakistani spy. Some moments between Ayushmann Khurrana and Suhail Nayyar also evoked laughs. Oh, we also have to appreciate the witty political sarcasm and the creativity with which it recreates some old Hindi tunes to fit the plot.

The Interesting Premise

The plot of Udta Teer is promising and something that holds your attention. The build-up and the suspense around who is the spy of which country are intriguing. So naturally, there is curiosity around what will happen next. But does the film successfully quench this thirst of curiosity? Not really!

Supporting Cast Is Perfect!

The supporting cast of Udta Teer certainly gives us a good time at the movies. Mukul Dev, Rahul Bose, Suhail Nayyar and Sandeep Anand are a delight. Laughs are guaranteed when they appear on the screen.

Performances

Ayushmann Khurrana’s performances are wholesome too. We have seen the actor deliver comedy and other emotions flawlessly, and even this time, he doesn’t miss the mark. Sara Ali Khan gets limited scope with her character, but the actor has a decent on-screen presence.

Weak Lead Female Character

Udta Teer hardly has female characters, or anything substantial for them to add. Sara Ali Khan plays the role of a Government employee, working for the Ministry of Defence. However, her character will only be remembered as the wife of Ayushmann Khuranna’s Vikrant, which is unfortunate. We have repeatedly seen little to no effort being put into writing female characters, and hence, there are no surprises here either.

The Distracting Romantic Track

The husband-wife track of the two actors, Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan, is only a distraction in the plot. It is not written well enough for us to either find the on-screen couple charming or connect with any of their conflicts. Udta Teer could also go without a forced romantic song in the second half; it was unnecessary.

The Second Half

Udta Teer becomes more about twists and less about fun in the second half. Also, the final twist is only cliché patriotism-inducing. Safe to say that the film ended up playing it safe and turned out to be quite basic.

Verdict

I had high expectations from Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan’s Udta Teer, but the film does not deliver fully or stay true to the authenticity promised in the first half. The film is a one-time watch.
