‘The Male Feminist’ Ep 7: Zareen Khan’s Reveals Who Her Feminist Idol Is

No matter how small their contributions may be, I always look back at the women who came before me with respect and empathy. Regardless of how far we yet need to go to attain true gender equality, it is important to remember that we as women are where we are because of the struggles the women before us went through. Hence, I completely resonated with Zareen Khan after she shared how her mother became her feminist idol on The Male Feminist.

Zareen Khan spoke about her mother becoming her idol growing up. Zareen spoke about being a tomboy growing up. She said that her mother was considered a tomboy too when she was younger and believes that this might have been passed down to her. She further added that while her mother tolerated a lot of problematic behaviour before marriage, she eventually found her voice and “became the woman she was.” Zareen shared that she witnessed her mother go through a lot of abuse while she was growing up in her marriage. However, her mother eventually grew to be her own person and she stood up for herself and her children. Zareen said she was inspired by her mother showing so much courage despite being a woman who wasn’t educated or hadn’t seen much of the world. She added that seeing her mother stand up for herself put the seed of independence within her.

This is why I feel like having strong female figures in one’s life growing up is important. I grew up with my nani who was a very strong and independent woman. Because of her influence, I believe that I too started craving the same independence that I witnessed her have. And I really hope that if I am ever raising a daughter, I too can inspire her to be the same.
