TMF: “My Family Was Modern But Society Wasn’t”: Debina Bonnerjee Gets Real About Her Modern Upbringing

Growing up in a family that was open-minded and accepting of different ideas and lifestyles was a privilege. The latest episode of The Male Feminist featured a candid conversation with Debina Bonnerjee, in which she opened up about her childhood and the challenges she faced growing up in a household that was liberal and accepting but stepping outside into a society that was the complete opposite. Debina shared that while she was fortunate to have parents who were open-minded and encouraged her to explore her interests, the broader society had a very different mindset. It was rigid and resistant to change, with people clinging to outdated beliefs and ways of living that had been passed down for generations.

For Debina, this created a daily struggle between the person she was at home, where she felt free to express herself and be true to who she was and the person she had to be outside in order to fit in and avoid judgment. Her mother’s concern for her safety outside the home was palpable, and she often cautioned her to dress appropriately for the conservative society she would encounter. But this only fueled Debina’s desire to rebel against the restrictive norms imposed upon her, and she found herself questioning why she couldn’t do certain things that felt natural and right to her.

Growing up in such a dichotomous environment undoubtedly had a profound impact on Debina, shaping her worldview and identity in ways that she continues to explore and unpack to this day. Her story is a powerful reminder of the complex interplay between individual freedom and societal constraints and the importance of finding a way to navigate the two in a way that feels authentic and true to oneself.
