The two-minute-long trailer shows the story of Sushmita Sen’s character, Gauri, who was born a male child but was effeminate from childhood. Ganesh liked to wear sarees and apply bindis, but his mother banished him because of his ladylike gestures. Ganesh is accepted by a group of local kinnar people who treat him with respect. But growing up, he found it difficult to stand in admission form queues because there was no queue for transgenders.

Ganesh also undergoes surgery to biologically become a woman. And from here, starts his fight to get society to treat the third gender with respect. But her legal fight is not easy, as she faces several hindrances in this journey.

Sushmita Sen’s transformation from Ganesh to Gauri is quite commendable. The way she has tried to change her voice from when she was a young male to when she transforms into a trans-female, is evidently seen. Her fight for transgender equality is a reflection of our society, and how we have outcasted transgenders.

This series will hopefully come as an eye-opener to treat transgenders with respect and change their outlooks towards them. Because it is the people who always treated them differently and only saw their gender instead of seeing that they are humans just like the rest of us. The trailer also gave a glimpse into how gender roles get assigned right at birth, and those who are neither males nor females, get easily ostracised. Sushmita Sen’s role is inspired by the real-life transgender activist, Gauri Sawant.

Sushmita Sen starrer Taali series will release on Jio Cinema On August 15, 2023.
