Sushmita Sen Chose Web Series Over Mainstream Cinema Because Because The Latter Is Ageist. We’re Glad She Did!

There are very few female actors who’ve successfully made a comeback in the entertainment industry after being on a sabbatical. One of them is Sushmita Sen. The talented actor got back in the entertainment business after taking a break for almost 10 years with her thrilling series, Aarya, in 2020. Her decision to work with an OTT platform instead of getting back in mainstream Bollywood had a lot of people wondering why. And in a recent interview, the actor revealed that she decided to go with the OTT platform because the mainstream cinema was not giving her the roles she was looking for.

In an interview with Sucharita Tyagi, Sushmita Sen opened up about why she chose to make her comeback after 10 years with a web series rather than a mainstream Bollywood movie. She said that she wasn’t getting offered the kind of roles she was looking for because Bollywood is ageist.

Sushmita Sen further elaborated that during her 10-year sabbatical, she got clarity as to what kind of roles she wanted to do and what her priorities were. She said that Bollywood offered her roles with a preconceived notion with regards to her age and her 10-year hiatus. The Aarya actor also said that she had missed out on a lot of opportunities when she decided to make a comeback because she isn’t good with networking.

If you ask me, her reasons to me seem pretty valid. Bollywood is known for having certain beauty and age standards that they hardly ever bend for anyone. And I believe that this is one of the main reasons why OTT platforms have gained so much popularity among actors in India.
