‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’: SC Dismisses Plea Filed By Real Gangubai’s Adoptive Son Seeking Injunction On Release Of The Film

In the past few years, every Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie has fallen into some of the other kinds of controversy. So, it was only expected that even Gangubai Kathiawadi would follow the same path. One after the other, the movie has been making headlines for multiple reasons – one of them being a defamation case filed against the producers, actress – Alia Bhatt, and authors of the book that inspired the movie. Who filed the case? A man who claimed to be an adoptive son of the real Gangubai. However, in a recent hearing, the Supreme Court of India dismissed the plea that sought an injunction on the release of Gangubai Kathiawadi.

Aryama Sundaram, the advocate representing the filmmakers of Gangubai Kathiawadi, stated in court that the case was filed by the petitioner without even seeing the movie (as it hasn’t been released yet). He further questioned the legitimacy of the claim the petitioner made of being the adoptive son. He even dealt with another claim that the petitioner makes regarding using the names of victims of sexual assaults. To which, the advocate states, “This is not an ongoing trial and she is not a victim. She is someone who has died 42 years ago. She is not a victim. Every house has a picture of her.”

Needless to say, the filmmakers of Gangubai Kathiawdi won the case as the Supreme Court of India dismissed the plea. Honestly, it would be nothing short of a miracle if one movie of Sanjay Leela Bhansali would be released without any controversy. Having said that, I can’t wait for the movie to hit the theatres on February 25th, 2022.
