Satyaprem Ki Katha Review: Kiara Advani, Kartik Aaryan Move You In This Mature Story Of Unconditional Love
Go watch it!

I got up at 7 to watch Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani’s Satyaprem Ki Katha. Honestly, I had a preconceived idea that this would be another romantic saga where the lead characters would fall in love, have heartbreak and so on. And that’s where I was proven wrong. In reality, I was actually not prepared to see everything that Sameer Vidwans’ directorial had to offer and I was left feeling a rush of emotions after watching it. From characters to performances and storyline, there are so many aspects of this film that needs to be talked and I will try to unfold them gradually with this review. Worry not because there won’t be spoilers as I would really want you to go ahead and give it a watch!

Characters
Kartik Aaryan’s character Satyaprem is introduced to us through a song. He plays a Gujarati boy who is jobless and naive but desperately wants to get married. However, there is only one girl who is stuck in his mind and that is Katha, played by the gorgeous Kiara Advani. Katha belongs to a rich family but deals with a traumatic past that has left deep scars in her life. Gajraj Rao and Supriya Pathak play the role of Satyaprem urf Sattu’s parents. Shikha Talsania plays Sattu’s sister in the film. Rajpal Yadav also has a few appearances as the milkman.

Plot
Satyaprem Ki Katha is no ordinary love story. It delivers a strong social message around topics that not only need to be addressed but also need awareness. The storyline of Satyaprem Ki Katha starts like a usual romantic plot with Sattu wanting to marry his dream girl Katha but stops pursuing her after knowing that she has a boyfriend. But, but some dreams come true! Sattu eventually gets married to Katha but not really under normal circumstances. Satyaprem Ki Katha slowly turns into a more serious film that will give you a rush of emotions in some moments. Audiences are gradually made aware of the traumas and fears that Katha deals with and the entire truth around it unfolds by the second half of the film. Although Kartik Aaryan plays the lead in this Sameer Vidwans film, his character Sattu is the supporting hero in Katha’s life and this chemistry will leave the audience in tears. The film moves forward to show how Sattu empowers Katha with his honest approach towards life and maturely handles the marriage like it was supposed to be!

Performances
All the actors in the film delivered impeccable performances, but the lead actors leave a different impression altogether. Kartik Aaryan as Sattu is a likeable character that makes you think, ‘Yeah honesty IS the best policy actually”. I was so invested in his character that I actually started to feel every emotion that Sattu expressed. In some moments, even I had a foolish smile on my face like Sattu and in some, I too felt the rage and pain that he felt. And this was the case with Kiara Advani’s (Katha) character too. Kiara Advani does absolute justice in portraying the pain, trauma, fears and insecurities of Katha’s character. Every woman will connect with Katha’s moments of hopelessness, courage and relief. That’s when you know that Kiara Advani understood the assignment really well. Gajraj Rao and Supriya Pathak as Sattu’s parents were equally amazing in both comic moments and the super emotional ones. Kartik and Gajraj Rao share the cutest father-son bond on screen, but are promising in the moments of clashes too! Rajpal Yadav was a treat to watch in his few appearances as a milkman. Unfortunately, Shikha Talsania’s role goes unnoticed and I wish she had more screen presence as the sister.

Verdict
Sameer Vidwans’ Satyaprem Ki Katha was less of a romantic story and more of an emotional roller coaster for me. This was because the film sheds light on some sensitive themes and also a crime against women that most of us do not even know about. The story, dialogues and characters are written in such an impactful way that it does not take away the essence of what the film stands for, not even for a moment. I just had one complaint that within ten minutes into the film there were two songs already. This unnecessary addition could’ve been avoided but I let it slide because it did not take my interest away from the film. In fact, the songs blended quite well. Overall, Satyaprem Ki Katha needs to be watched to know how a good film has the potential to make the audiences feel that waking up at 7 was worth it, just like me! On that note, I urge you to go watch the film.It had a theatrical release on June 29, 2023.
