Actress Sandeepa Dhar Praises Vivek Agnihotri’s ‘The Kashmir Files’, Recounts Her Family’s Experience Of Fleeing Kashmir

The beauty of cinema is that one can tell stories that might have been forgotten or were not known about in the first place. For example, we have had so many biographical movies that have told us about the distinctive lives that many personalities have lived. One such movie that came out recently is The Kashmir Files by Vivek Agnihotri. The movie has gotten praise and became popular in a very short period of time, and for good reason. It highlights the plight of the Kashmiri pandit when they were forced out of their homeland. Recently actress Sandeepa Dhar watched The Kashmir Files and took to Instagram to talk about her family’s experience when they were forced to leave their homeland 30 years ago.

Sandeepa wrote about the day that Kashmiri Pandits were asked to leave their women behind and flee. She said that her family decided to run away hiding in the back of a trunk with her young cousin sister hidden behind her father’s feet, under the seat for safety in the middle of the night. She said that the disturbing scenes in The Kashmir Files shook her as it is literally her own story. Sandeepa said that her grandmother died waiting to return to her homeland, Kashmir.

She said that the movie was a punch to her gut. However, it has been much harder on Sandeepa’s family as they experienced PTSD from having to relive the horrors of fleeing from Kashmir.

She continued to thank Vivek Agnihotri and Anupam Kher for The Kashmir Files. Sandeepa captioned with a poem by Kashmiri poet Naseem Shafaie, “I asked the rose, where is your scent? It said, “The autumn took it away.” I asked the spring, why the lines on your forehead? It said, “For my wounds have been salted.”
So I left the garden that once bloomed And since then, I wander, aimless.”
