Sameera Reddy Shares Her Journey With Alopecia Areata Amidst The Ongoing Smith-Rock Slap Gate, Urges People To Be Sensitive
Ever since the eventful Oscars took place, people cannot stop talking about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock. People are torn between whether what he did was right or wrong but rarely do I hear people talking about how it might have affected Jada Pinkett Smith and anyone else who might have the same diagnosis or knows someone who has alopecia. Just imagine a person with alopecia might think that if such a well-known actress can be made fun of in front of thousands of people, then what are the chances they will not? Well, Sameera Reddy who herself was diagnosed with alopecia, in her latest post talks about her journey with the disease and urges people to be sensitive towards each other.

On March 29, Sameera Reddy took to her Instagram and revealed that she was diagnosed with alopecia areata back in 2016 when her husband and entrepreneur, Akshai Varde spotted a 2-inch bald spot at the back of her head. In her post, she pens down her journey with the “traumatic disease”.

Sameera Reddy wrote, “The current #oscar controversy made me want to shed light that we all have our individual battles we are fighting and healing from and we need to create a positive safe space for one other ??What Is Alopecia Areata? It is an auto immune disease . When you have Alopecia Areata, cells in your immune system surround and attack your hair follicles. This causes the attached hair to fall out that causes patches of bald spots . I got diagnosed with it in 2016 when Akshai saw I had a 2-inch bald spot at the back of my head. In one month I discovered two more patches. It was really hard to deal with.”

The actress further went on to say how the disease doesn’t get people sick nor is it contagious but it is very difficult to adapt emotionally. Sameera Reddy goes on to talk about how for many people it becomes very difficult to not just cope with the actual hair loss but also the emotional aspect of hair loss. She goes on to say that she had to take corticosteroid injections on the scalp after which her hair grew back in the three bald patches she had. Having said that, she does know that there is no cure for alopecia areata and no specific reason as to why a person gets it.

Sameera Reddy further went on to talk about the different types of alopecia that exist – alopecia totalis, alopecia ophiasis, and alopecia universalis. She concludes her post by saying, “I’ve been told I have to be aware it can come back at any point in my life. I do take homeopathy and i holistically hope to keep it at bay.
