In recent events, content creator and actor Sahiba Bali faced massive criticism and abuse after she reposted a message about society’s hypocrisy towards women. The post drew parallels between society’s worship of Goddess Durga and its crackdown on women protestors during the protests calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
Sahiba Bali Receives Threats
Sahiba Bali shared a message about the irony of worshipping and celebrating goddesses for their strength while suppressing women who express their anger and demand their rights. The post questioned why society praises feminine strength in religion but often struggles to accept it in real life. After reposting this, Bali faced massive backlash, with many users sending her abusive messages. She shared many such screenshots of these comments, including people who were spamming these abusive messages. In her note, she admitted to feeling exhausted by the hostility she faced and the risks of speaking out.
Sahiba said that she did not support any kind of hate speech, revealing the cost of speaking up and how it can be a danger to safety and livelihood. In another post, she also revealed the criticism she gets for expressing her views on politics and religion and said that both speaking up and remaining silent seemed to invite abuse her way. Bali further clarified that she was not a BJP supporter, although former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee was her favourite politician. She called Congress a “weak opposition” but praised former PM Manmohan Singh for his contribution to India’s economy around 1991. While she did support the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi, she said that her voting decision would be her own and would not be influenced by fear.
