‘Persuasion’ Twitter Reviews: People Have A Love-Hate Relationship With Dakota Johnson’s Period Drama
I usually don’t like reading classic books because I find them quite boring but I will read any novel which is written by female authors and I am not going to give a reason for that. However, I have a very controversial opinion on Jane Austen’s books. Well, speaking of Jane Austen, Netflix’s period drama film Persuasion starring Dakota Johnson, Henry Golding, and Cosmo Jarvis released today and we got the Twitter reviews. Looks like it’s a ‘nay’ for the film!

On July 15, Persuasion was released on Netflix featuring Dakota Johnson as Anne Elliot, Henry Golding as Mr William Elliot, and Cosmo Jarvis as Captain Frederick. Like most of her films, we thought people will actually love Dakota’s new period drama but turns out Twitter is apparently in a love-hate relationship with it. The Twitter reviews are suggesting that the makers of the film did not understand the plot of the novel and they are saying that the Cha Cha Real Smooth actress is doing her worst and annoyingly painful Fleabag impression, that is kind of harsh, not gonna lie. The film is directed by Carrie Cracknell, and the screenplay is written by Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow. And as we all know, it is based on the novel of the same name by Jane Austen.

Persuasion is the sort of Austen adaptation that makes you wonder if its creators understand why Jane Austen is popular in the first place. Check out my review: https://t.co/fChCs1DQCm

What is (preemptively) pissing me off about the new Persuasion is that it speaks to a much, much larger problem in adaptations of classics where studios seem to think all these female characters need to be glossed with a zany millennial girlboss patina to become Relevant™️

Just finished watching #Persuasion, and I enjoyed it! If you’re a Jane Austen purist, give it a miss, but if you approach it with an open mind and a sense of humour, it’s quite fun! pic.twitter.com/YoLXDsWpo4

I was so excited to watch Netflix's persuasion even after the initial reviews. Having watched it, I am still in disbelief over the absolute trainwreck it was. They made Anne into a shell of a character. What a waste. I need to purge myself of this crime. Sally Hawkins, ILY.

netflix really gave us Persuasion and said “here’s dakota johnson doing her worst and annoyingly painful fleabag impression enjoy”

I think the worst part of #Persuasion is probably that the writers tried to write this adaptation similar to the latest Emma adaptation – quirky, upbeat, breaking the 4th wall. It just doesn't work because Persuasion is a completely different book in tone.

The embargo for Netflix Persuasion is up and I actually LIKED the film. I’m annoyed people hate the film so much because we need more diverse Austen adaptations set in period and gatekeepers are gonna ruin that for us Black and POC fans.

Just started watching #Persuasion, but had to stop, mortified. Film would be great, except for the role of Anne. I don't understand the need for disruption via breaking of 4th wall, nor her silliness, her clumsyness, her irony. All the negative reviews are sadly to the point. pic.twitter.com/iPxrgZgqZb
