In a recent turn of events, Durex Pakistan is facing massive backlash after it tried recreating the famous horror film Obsession in one of its ads. For the unversed, the film collected over $250 million worldwide with a budget of just $750,000. The ad showcased the product kept on the lead character’s car right next to the main device, which was the One Wish Willow. The tagline read, “Make her obsessed with you,” as the caption encouraged men to send it to their “freaky Nikki.” Read to know the internet’s reaction here.
Durex Pakistan’s Obsession Ad
The horror film stars a lonely man named Bear who receives a magical trinket called One Wish Willow and instantly wishes for his childhood friend Nikki to love him more than anyone else in the world. After the wish works, her feelings become obsessive and too much till the point that she can’t stand being away from him and panics whenever he leaves. A scene that caught everyone’s attention was when Bear and Nikki had s*x after using the supernatural wish, which left her unable to control her actions. The main issue that people had with this Durex Pakistan ad was that they used this film based on her non-consensual feelings, and sold it with a tagline that said, “Make her obsessed with you.”
Even the caption that mentioned “Freaky Nikki” made it demeaning towards the female character, who had lost control of her own life and emotions without consent. They took this horror and made it a punchline, which defied the whole concept of what the makers were trying to portray. Many labelled this as “disgusting” and stated that it completely ignored the context. They called out the brand whose whole image is promoting consensual s*xual experiences, promoting something horrible.
