The Male Feminist: “You’re The Pretty Element,” Nupur Sanon On How Comedy Is Still Dominated By Male Stars
Are we really progressive?

Comedy is a genre in films that is hard to ace. One of the hardest things to do is get someone to laugh. And have you ever thought why only male actors have dominated this genre in films for so long? On the very recent episode of Hauterrfly’s The Male Feminist, actress Nupur Sanon gave a very interesting answer to this and revealed a shocking mindset that exists for women doing comedy. Well, the actress also backed up the answer with her personal experiences in the industry.

In episode 25 of The Male Feminist, when Siddharth Aalambayan asked Nupur Sanon why comedy is still dominated by male stars, the actress gave a quick response. She said that while doing comedy, an actor has to make certain kinds of weird faces and expressions which are not pretty. And for the heroines, looking pretty on the big screen has always been given priority. Elaborating on the same, Nupur Sanon said that someone from the industry had also told her that she was the “pretty element” in the lot, and suggested she not make weird expressions like others. That person was reminding her to maintain her femininity even while doing comedy, added Nupur Sanon.

The actress also touched on the topic of what kind of expectations society has from women in terms of their behaviour, like laughing decently or maybe sitting properly. And this I believe most of us have heard in our lives sometime or the other.

Nupur Sanon made her acting debut with B Praak’s song Filhaal along side Akshay Kumar. She recently did a series in the comedy genre Pop Kaun with many actors famous for acting in comic roles. So, she must have had a first-hand experience there.
