The ‘Modern Family’ Dynamics Of Bollywood Are Updating What It Means To Be A Family!
Modern families are beautiful!

Throughout history, the definition of a family has been ever-changing, and yet, a conventional family is considered as one which has two parents and their children. However, over the past few years, these dynamics are undergoing a change, and we are witnessing many types of families emerge and co-exist in ways which couldn’t have been imaginable in earlier times. The modern family isn’t just two parents, married and looking after their biological children. It’s expanded to include so much more, and we have quite a few examples of this modern family in Bollywood too.
The definition of family has expanded to include single parents, separated parents, step-parents, adopted kids, foster families, LGBTQIA+ people who have had kids via surrogacy and IVF etc. This acceptance of various kinds of families is in a very real sense, modernisation at its best and we are really glad to have been fortunate enough to witness this ever-changing scenario.
Of course, as always, the trendsetters for this modern change too, are from the film industry i.e. Bollywood. So, let’s have a look at the celebrities championing modern families in the industry.
9 Amazing Modern Families In Bollywood
1. The Pataudi Family
The Pataudi family is an example of how divorce shouldn’t necessarily mean breaking a family. Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh are divorced and leading separate lives. But they are parenting their children together. Kareena Kapoor married Saif Ali Khan. But as she once spoke in an interview, she never tried to be a ‘step-mother’ to Saif’s kids, Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan. She is more like a friend, changing the common perception attached to being a stepmother.
We often see Saif, Kareena, and their two biological kids, Taimur and Jeh, celebrate important festivals and special occasions together with Sara and Ibrahim.
2. Hrithik Roshan And Sussanne Khan
After 14 years of marriage and then a divorce, Hrithik Roshan and his ex-wife Sussanne Khan remain friends and are extremely supportive of each other. Could it be because before marriage they were close friends for a long time too? Perhaps, but it is incredible to see the way the two have managed to be in each other’s lives without a hassle. Sussanne supports Hrithik’s relationship with actor Saba Azad, and he supports her relationship with Arslan Goni. The two couples have even partied together, much to the amazement of fans, who might not be familiar with this modern family dynamic.
When it comes to their kids, Hridaan and Hrehaan, the two are great at sharing parenting duties. Maybe the ease in their personal relationship helps them fulfil this duty smoothly too.
4. Aamir Khan And Kiran Rao
Aamir Khan was previously married to Reena Dutta, and has two kids, Junaid and Ira Khan, with her. Post-divorce, he went on to marry filmmaker Kiran Rao, with whom he was married for 15 years but ended up separating a little while ago. The two also have a son together, Azad. Yet Aamir and Kiran are still good friends and there is no bitterness among them. They support each other, get together and co-parent.
5. Arbaaz Khan And Malaika Arora
Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora were married for 18 years before they separated in 2017. They continue to co-parent their son Arhaan in the most supportive manner. You’ll often see paparazzi videos of them dropping or picking up Arhaan at the airport together. Arbaaz is currently dating model Giorgia Andriani, who recently said about Malaika, “I really like her and I appreciate her journey a lot. She also started from zero basically, she was a model so then slowly she reached where she has reached and kudos to her. For me, she’s definitely somebody that I do admire.” Meanwhile, Malaika is dating actor Arjun Kapoor.
6. Konkona Sen Sharma And Ranvir Shorey
They got married in 2010 and went their separate ways five years later. The two, however, have remained friends and continue to co-parent their son Haroon. He also supported her when she recently spoke out about her idea of gender. No mess, chaos or toxicity!
7. Karan Johar And His Adorable Kids Yash and Roohi
Karan Johar is a single parent to two kids, Roohi and Yash Johar. Karan Johar never got married but had his kids via surrogacy in 2017 to start his own family. This was a beautiful and bold move which motivated many people to do the same.
8. Tusshar Kapoor, The Single Dad
Tusshar Kapoor paved the way to motivate other single dads to have their kids. He had his son, Lakshya through surrogacy in 2016 and this even motivated his sister Ekta, to have her child via surrogacy too.
9. Sushmita Sen And Her Beautiful Daughters
Sushmita Sen adopted her elder daughter Renee when she was just about 24 years old. She then adopted her younger daughter Alisah in 2010 and continues to live her life in the most independent and commendable manner.
