But is it a violation of the Academy rules?

Internet Is Divided Over Michelle Yeoh’s Now-Deleted Post Naming Fellow Oscar Nominee

TBH, Oscar deserves an Oscar for all the scandals and controversies it can stir up even before the big day. It looks like the 2023 Academy Awards will make you forget all about the 2022 Oscar slap gate. We’re days away from the big event and controversies around the nominations and nominees refuse to come to an end. Just weeks ago Andrea Risborough’s Oscar nomination for Best Actress led to a HUGE controversy as there were allegations that To Leslie breached the Academy campaign rules. And now it looks like Everything Everywhere All At Once actress Michelle Yeoh has landed in a soup for violating the rules with an Instagram post.

Just hours before the Oscars voting was set to close on March 7, Michelle Yeoh shared screenshots of an article, published by a leading portal, on Instagram that highlighted the lack of diversity when it comes to the winners of the Oscars. The article mentioned the fact that only one woman of colour has won the Best Actress Oscar, that is, Halle Berry (2001) for Monster’s Ball. Further, the article noted how Michelle Yeoh’s previous awards including the Screen Actor’s Guild has paved the path for her to win the Oscar which would be a historic win as it would make the actress the first Asian actor to win the award. I know what you’re thinking – how is that a violation? Well, the article also highlighted that actress Cate Blanchett, who has been nominated for the award for her performance in Tár, is a strong contender due to her previous Oscar wins as well as all the awards the actress has won for the film including BAFTA, Gloden Globes, Critics Choice and more.

TBH, the article shared by Michelle Yeoh in the Instagram post simply called out the racism in the entertainment industry while highlighting that it’s quite impossible that in the history of the Oscars, only one woman of colour has won the award for her performance no other woman of colour has delivered a performance as good as the ones delivered by the other winners of the award (over the years) who all happened to be white. Now, there’s nothing wrong with calling a spade a space but as per the Academy Award rules, nominees of the awards are not permitted to refer to other nominees by name or titles or to single out the competition in any manner whatsoever. Essentially, this means that naming any competitor is a violation of the rules which might be the case here.

Even though Michelle Yeoh deleted the post later, her actions have managed to garner attention and draw flak from the people on the internet. Several users have called out the actress for targeting Cate Blanchett.

TBH, that doesn’t look like targeting to me. However, whether Michelle broke the rules or not is not for us to decide. It’s for the Academy to decide and we’re simply here hoping for the best so history can be made!
