Is your Goa trip with friends still pending? For many of us, it has become a dream waiting to turn into a reality. Well, while we still wait for that to happen, there’s a new movie in the theatres titled Madgaon Express, directed and written by Kunal Kemmu. It stars Pratik Gandhi, Divyenndu and Avinash Tiwary in lead roles. Nora Fatehi, Upendra Limaye and Chhaya Kadam play the supporting characters in the film. Madgaon Express is a story that revolves around three boys who finally make their Goa trip happen but it does not go as per the plan and, well, expectations. The film is a laughter riot with some brilliant performances that become the strongest points. However, Madgaon Express also comes with a set of flaws! Here’s our detailed review for you to decide whether you want to vicariously live through this Goa trip or not!

Plot

Madgaon Express tells a funny story about three boys Pinku (Pratik Gandhi), Dodo (Divyenndu) and Ayush (Avinash Tiwary) and their childhood dream to go on a Goa trip where they can have chilled beer on the beach and see some babes in bikinis! The film starts by introducing us to the younger version of each character, and their desperate urge to go to Goa, but of course, parents nahi maane! Cut to the phase when the boys turn 21, and again make a spontaneous plan for Goa but it fails again! Slowly and steadily, many years pass by, and life changes for each of them except Dodo. Pinku moves to Cape Town and Ayush settles in New York, while Dodo stays back in Mumbai. In an attempt to impress his friends, Dodo makes a social media account to post photoshopped pictures for people, especially his friends to think that he has become a billionaire. The plot moves forward to show that the three boys reunite and finally take their Goa trip. Dodo convinces them to do their low-budget Goa trip to reminisce about their college days and feel like a young chap again! The boys set for Goa in the Madgaon Express, and that is where all the fun, confusion and plot twists begin to happen. The story of Madgaon Express also has sub-plots about two gangs run by Mendosa (Uppender Limaye) and Kanchan Komdi (Chhaya Kadam), and how their lives intertwine with the three boys, on a Goa trips. The plot keeps taking new twists and turns especially after the interval. and it’s a spoiler that I will not break for you all!

Positives

Performances

Divyenndu as Dodo has to be my favourite character throughout. From the beginning till the end of Madgaon Express, Divyenndu was consistent in his performance as the quirky Dodo who turns every emotional or serious moment into a hilarious one. The actor’s perfect comic timing, punch lines, dialogue delivery and expressions are the major highlights of Madgaon Express. Divyenndu brought his charm and sincerity to the character of Dodo and you just wish to have a Jugaadu friend like him in your life too! I loved him in every scene and frame!

Pratik Gandhi as Pinku is the only character in the film that has an impressive character arc. The naive, touch-me-not mumma’s little boy turns into a macho fearless man after an unexpected twist in the film. Pratik Gandhi had some clap-worthy moments too. It was a fresh change to see the actor play a light-hearted comedy role so effortlessly.

Story, Dialogues, Comedy

After a long time, I watched a film with good and natural comedy, and all the credit for this smart writing goes to Kunal Kemmu. The punch lines in the film were not something out of the box, but they became more impactful because of their timing. Madgaon Express turned into a laughter riot because the characters and their camaraderie had the relatibility factor even if the plot seemed to be too chaotic at times. The one-liners became the biggest source of extracting belly laughs from the audience.  Kunal Kemmu’s effort to make Madgaon Express a not-so-simple story about three boys on a Goa trip by adding elements of chaos and confusion deserves applause! Kunal Kemmu has hit the ball out of the park with this directorial debut.

Supporting Characters

All the actors in Madgaon Express deserve our attention. Avinash Tiwary as the mature and most sorted boy Ayush is impressive throughout. Upendra Limaye as the gang leader Mendosa is an actor who delivers nothing less than what is expected of him. He is naturally and effortless in his character. Chhaya Kadam as the gang leader Kanchan Komdi was always received by claps and hootings during her screen presence. The actress nailed the swag and performance as the leader of the Komdi gang! Nora Fatehi as Tasha did not have much to add to the screenplay, but the actress delivered a decent performance in the film. Remo D’Souza was also a delight to watch on-screen. There is also a fun cameo in the film that I am sure, you will enjoy!

Negatives

Sub Plots

Madgaon Express’ major drawback is that it has many sub-plots which makes the film stretchy in some moments. I strongly felt that there was no need to add so many characters to the film as it became a distracting element for me. The unnecessary songs in the middle of a good scene also broke the consistency and kinda felt frustrating!

Duration!

Madgaon Express’ run time is 2 hours 23 minutes which is a little too much for a comedy film. I could feel the restlessness in the audience sitting next to me, and well, I was one of them. This was solely because the movie had moments which could have been ditched during the editing of the film.
