Yay!

The legal battle surrounding the release of Imtiaz Ali’s film Chamkila, starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, took a significant turn as the Ludhiana court dismissed a plea seeking to delay the film’s release. Scheduled to debut on Netflix on April 12, the movie delves into the life of the iconic Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila and his partner Amarjot Kaur who were killed by militants.

The court of additional district judge, Shatin Goyal, declined to pass any injunction orders, opting instead to adjourn the application and provide the filmmakers with time to file their written response. The next hearing is scheduled for May 6, allowing both parties to present their arguments before the court. The plea, filed by Ishdeep Singh Randhawa of Patiala on April 8, sought a “perpetual injunction” on the film’s release. Randhawa claimed that Chamkila’s first wife, Gurmail Kaur, had sold exclusive rights to the biopic to his late father, Gurdev Singh, a prominent figure in the Punjabi film industry. According to Randhawa, his father acquired the rights through a formal agreement in 2012.

This legal dispute comes after Randhawa withdrew a similar lawsuit filed in a Ludhiana court last year, which was deemed out of time and not a case of copyright infringement. The court’s decision not to grant an injunction in that instance paved the way for the film’s release. Reliance Entertainment and Window Seat Films, the producers of Amar Singh Chamkila, confirmed that the case has been adjourned to May 6, indicating that the legal proceedings are far from over.
