It is shocking that the blame for the failure of marriage always falls on the shoulders of a woman. There have been several instances in the past when the woman has been blamed for ‘breaking’ a marriage and has been labelled ‘selfish’ for filing a divorce. Yet again, the man walks away unscathed from such situations because it is always a woman’s fault, isn’t it? The current case in question is that of Kusha Kapil. The popular influencer-actor who announced her split with Zorawar Singh has been targeted on the Internet. People are spewing hate against her saying that she is getting divorced because she is too selfish and in the course of her fam did not prioritise her relationship.

But a Twitter user, whose handle is @Paromitabardolo, shared some insight into why people are bullying Kusha Kapila for announcing divorce from Zorawar. She wrote that the main reason why people are so angry at Kusha’s divorce (these trolls have no business having opinions on this but okay) is because she had the agency to leave the marriage for unlisted reasons, and not because people have empathy for her or are remotely concerned about her and Zorawar. She further added that people always get angry at a woman’s agency to walk away.

Paromita further went on to explain that when a woman exercises her agency to leave things that do work for her riles up patriarchy. She added that marriage is considered a holy institution, and women leave this institution, this hurts the patriarchal conditional and this is why everyone is villainising Kusha.

The Twitter user went on to call out the women who have been writing against Kusha Kapila and said that if they ever need to get out of marital institutions that are not working for them, they too will benefit from the constitutional rights that they are entitled to. Paromita also asked these women to stop exhibiting classic ‘pick me’ behaviour.

First of all, these outsiders who are badmouthing Kusha have no right to do so because this is a personal matter which does not require anyone’s judgement. Secondly, if she has decided to part ways with her partner, it is her choice, and people must respect it. Kusha Kapila and Zorawar Singh got married in 2017 and announced their decision to part ways six years later.
