Bollywood actor Kirti Kulhari has found herself in the middle of a controversy after a clip from her recent interview drew some backlash. The actor was seen telling the amount quoted by a domestic worker right after she moved into a new house in Mumbai. She stated that she was surprised by the “high rate”, which led to a massive debate online with many arguing that the amount she mentioned was fair for household help in the city.

What Kirti Kulhari Said

During a chat with Bollywood Bubble, Kirti Kulhari opened up about moving to a new house on Yaari Road and looking for domestic help with her manager. She said that she was shocked by the amount quoted by a cook and a maid, and said that it “didn’t make sense” for tasks like sweeping, doing the dishes, mopping, laundry, and other chores within two hours. When asked how much they were charging for all this, she said Rs 10,000. As per Kulhari, such a rate was quoted since people assumed she could afford to pay more money due to her job.

Kirti further stated that the quoted amount didn’t match the work since the person would only be spending two hours on the job while completing a limited scope of work. The clip instantly went viral, where many criticised her comments, pointing out that asking for Rs 10,000 in a city like Mumbai, considering the physical labour involved, was not unusual. Amid this, actor Mini Mathur also jumped into the debate and defended the value of a domestic worker.

Mathur argued that the domestic worker’s two hours allow others to be productive during the same time, and also mentioned that Rs 10,000 would be considered below minimum wage in other parts of the world. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know.
