The director kept this streak alive by openly talking about the paid publicity in Bollywood. Karan Johar spoke about paid PR at a recent event during which he was reportedly asked about how certain actors like Janhvi Kapoor and Shanaya Kapoor opt to do method marketing for their recent films. He was asked if the trend of PR could catch on in Bollywood. According to the filmmaker, Bollywood should stop doing PR, and it would be much better that way. He added, “They should let their achievements speak for themselves because, unfortunately, all of PR is now ‘paid PR.’” Karan shared that if one wants to say they are looking gorgeous or are the best actor on earth, they simply have to pay. He also said that we are in overdrive mode when it comes to paid publicity, adding, “So whether they are doing method marketing or not is secondary; they should stop marketing themselves and let their work speak.”

Karan Johar Clarifies He Wasn’t Targeting Anyone

Having said this, Karan Johar reportedly clarified that he was not targeting anyone and didn’t mean the people they were talking about. He expressed that he was talking about everyone in general. The director acknowledged that publicity and marketing are very essential work categories, and they should be treated like that. He stated that now everything is available at a price, and that is something truly upsetting because then one cannot gauge what is connecting and what is not. Karan further said that now one looks at it and questions, “Are people really liking it or have they been paid to like it?”
