Lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar often makes headlines for giving controversial statements. And it has happened yet again. He recently criticised the feminist take on Yash Chopra’s directorial Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Javed Akhtar picked up a line from the Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma starrer to call out the problematic sides of feminism highlighted in the film. Read on to know more.

In a recent interview for one of the episodes of Be A Man, Yaar! singer, lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar shed his thoughts on women’s portrayal in Indian cinema and to elaborate on his point, he picked up a line from Yash Chopra’s film Jab Tak Hai Jaan. The writer recalled a dialogue in which the female character said that she would only marry after sleeping with a guy from every nationality. Javed Akhtar went on to take a dig at it and added that everyone understood that the female character is forward, empowered, cool and modern and that she doesn’t need to take the burden of proving that by sleeping with a guy of every nationality.

He further questioned the entire existence of this dialogue and stated that filmmakers are quite confused about the definition of modern women and therefore they keep exaggerating it.

Well, we believe that Javed Akhtar could have spoken about the evolution of women’s portrayal in Indian Cinema with a more positive approach. He rather opted for a very tunnel vision to view this change in cinemas. For the longest time, films have normalised the problematic behaviour of toxic men but they have hardly been seen through that lens. And when films show women and their desires through a range of characters, it looks exaggerated. Well, there is something that we should really think about her.
