Jasleen Royal Gets Candid About Gender Disparity Within The Bollywood Music Industry

Let us be honest, no matter how much we believe that our society has progressed, gender disparity is still a major problem in every sector. And it isn’t something that only exists within India, it’s all over the world. Considering the fact that women barely had the right to vote or drive a car up until recently, we can all agree that equality within gender dynamics has a long way to go ( hot take, I know). Recently, Jasleen Royal, composer of songs like ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan’ and ‘Dinn Shangna Da’ said that the ratio between mainstream male and female mainstream music directors is imbalanced.

The number of women working behind the scenes in Bollywood has risen over time. However, the disparity still remains. Jasleen Royal spoke about how there is still a long way to go to bridge the gap as she said, “History tells us that women began voting much later. Women still need to fight their families to step out for work. There is a deep conditioning, and changing the structure will take a while. We will achieve gender equality when biases can be eradicated from the ground level.”

Despite that, she seemed pretty optimistic about the future and the rise in women in the industry as she said, “The change is happening slowly. Today, we have female music composers such as Parampara Thakur and Sneha Khanwalkar. When we have women like them to look up to, more and more girls will be inspired to pursue their dreams.”

Jasleen Royal also spoke about her songs being dropped from movie albums at the last moment, saying she doesn’t hold it against those who choose to do so. She’s just glaf she is making music and is confident she’ll find her niche eventually.

It is great to see someone like Jasleen Royal who is so passionate about her art. However, it is a shame that there aren’t more like her due to the gender disparity within the industry. We can only hope that changes in the near future.
