Bollywood actor Ananya Panday and Lakshya’s new Dharma film, Chand Mera Dil, has hit theatres, and people have opinions. The former has become the centre of controversy after a clip of her performing a Bharatanatyam dance sequence went viral, triggering massive criticism. A clip from Chand Mera Dil shows Panday, aka Chandni, performing Bharatanatyam- fusion dance at a college event as Lakshya’s character watched. This clip triggered backlash, with many stating that they can’t defend the actor anymore. They called her moves and expressions robotic and disrespectful. One user wrote that they had learnt classical dancing for 10 years and that the actor’s video was “beyond atrocious.” While another said that seeing this performance was like watching the dance form “being held hostage.” Chand Mera Dil was directed by Vivek Soni and is about the story of Aarav and Chandni navigating through difficulties at an early stage in life.

Ananya Panday previously featured in another Dharma film called Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri with Kartik Aaryan. She played the role of an aspiring novelist called Rumi Vardhan, while Kartik played a wedding planner from LA named Rehaan “Ray” Mehra. While Rumi romanticises love stories and expects big Bollywood gestures, Rehaan is sceptical of the whole process. They eventually fall in love while navigating through family and individuality. The film did not perform well at the box office.
