“People Called Me Plump Despite Being A Good Actress,” Says Huma Qureshi On Producing ‘Double XL’

There is no doubt that films we have grown up watching have stereotyped gender roles, and also how are only appreciable if they look a certain way. The desired women on screen were always fair, slim, had straight hair, and were well-spoken. But thankfully, the portrayal of women on screens is changing with a more diverse female population getting represented. Recently, at an event organised by Netflix, Her Story, Her Voice, where Huma Qureshi was one of the panellists, she talked about how she decided on Double XL as her first production venture. She also recalled how people body-shamed her for being a plus-sized woman.

Huma Qureshi said that actresses are treated like apples in the film industry as after they get ripe, they are not any good. She said, “I think it’s so cool today that so many of my colleagues are getting married and having babies all in the public as opposed to 10 years ago when it was a taboo thing.” Huma, then, said, “There is a big shift in society which is also being represented by our films. Even when I was growing up, I did not have so many role models to look up to.”
