Fans Point Out How ‘House Of The Dragon’ Aptly Portrays The Toxic Way Men Handle Rejection

A new week means a new episode of House Of The Dragon. And that means finding more and more things that make the prequel series relatable. And thanks to the makers, episode 6 was filled with moments where I went ‘oh, can relate’ and ‘been there, experienced that’. Out of all things that were relatable, the most talked about was the conversation between Queen Alicent Hightower and Ser Criston Cole. Many fans took to Twitter to point out how the behaviour of Ser Criston Cole was similar to that of men in real life – the ones with fragile masculinity who can’t get over the fact that a woman rejected them.

Let me give you more context. *Spoiler Alert* Episode 6 of House Of The Dragon took a ten-year leap and showed Rhaenyra Targaryen (now played by Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent Hightower ( now played by Olivia Cooke) at different stages in their lives. The two of them who started off as close friends have now drifted apart – thanks to petty power moves and both of them wanting their kids to be the successors.

Episode 6 of House Of The Dragon shows both – Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower – all grown up and empowered – thanks to the allies they both have on their sides. The episode starts with Rhaenyra giving birth to her third child and son, Joffrey. Soon after his birth, Queen Alicent Hightower calls to see the baby boy and instead of sending the child through the servants, Rhaenyra herself goes with her baby to meet the Queen. It is at that time that Ser Criston Cole coldly greets her.

After this, an incident takes place involving both of their kids and Queen Alicent takes the matter to King Viserys to complain about Rhaenyra Targaryen’s kids. But when Viserys pays no heed to her, she vents out her frustrations to Ser Criston Cole. At this point in the House Of The Dragon episode, Ser Criston Cole also lets out a few complaints and calls Rhaenyra a “spoiled cunt”. The name-calling was enough to indicate that he clearly wasn’t over their one-night stand breakup.

Highlighting this part, many fans took to Twitter to say how much they loved the real portrayal of men in House Of The Dragon. In fact, to prove their point further, they drew comparisons where at one point Ser Criston Cole had implied that Rhaenyra Targaryen could marry him and when she denied him and married another man, he went ahead and called her a “spoiled cunt”.

And to be honest, I do agree with this. There are many men in the real world who have such extremely fragile male egos that they can’t digest the fact that any woman could reject them. Instead of respecting her decision and moving on, they will trash talk about her and call her names. It is to these men who can’t handle rejection that I ask, ‘when will you grow up?’.
