I have hardly come across any Hindi film that has rightfully covered the monotony of a female character living alone. I have not seen many films that show a female’s journey of self-exploration that would be relatable for normal independent women. With characters like Aisha in Wake Up Sid or Laila in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, their lives are just a romanticised version of living alone and it paints a very unrealistic idea in the minds of young women. However, here’s a quick reality check from someone who’s been in the city of dreams for quite some time now!
Aisha’s Mumbai Life In Wake Up Sid
Well, talk about a character that is misguiding women who dream of making a career in Mumbai, Aisha will also be on top of the list. While the love story is cute and all, Aisha’s (Konkona Sen Sharma) character is hardly relatable. Take it from me, without a job in Mumbai, one can hardly find a room to rent, let alone get an entire apartment for oneself. Also, I would have appreciated seeing some more struggles in Aisha’s professional and personal life because trust me, building a life as a writer in the city is not a cakewalk as shown through her character.
Kiara’s Maid In Dear Zindagi
I can’t be more honest here, it’s like an unattainable dream to get a caring and selfless maid like Kiara’s in Dear Zindagi. Me and my female friends struggle to find a decent maid who does her job well, being so considerate is quite impossible to get. Well, I wouldn’t lie, life would have been much easier if only one maid would take care of me, my mental health and my house with so much understanding.

Laila’s Finances In Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
Female characters are mostly so shallow in Indian films. They are carefree, managing life well and also fixing guys. And that’s why Laila’s character left with many questions. How was she managing her life and finances by just working as a scuba instructor? Fancy? Yes! In reality, even if we have stable jobs with salaries being credited to the accounts every month, women managing things alone still can’t imagine leading a life with such adventures.
All The Characters In Four More Shots!
Another unrealistic standard of women’s single life. Normal women living alone do not have glamorous lives as shown in this series. When a woman is living alone, life is much more than just partying, gossiping about boys or living a very lavish life. Even if we girls meet and discuss life, it’s more in-depth and the conversations are logical, basically about things that matter in life, maybe mental health and job stress, who bhi itne fancy nahi hote problems!
Well, all I am saying is that a woman’s life away from family, in the quest of building herself is in reality equally tedious, boring and filled with struggles (or even more) as compared to a man. However, films have failed to explore the layers of a female character living alone with the same amount of depth as that of Ved in Tamasha.
