‘Hautesteppers 3.0’ Ep 9: Swara Bhasker Says To Understand Feminism, One Has To Understand Patriarchy. She’s Got A Point!

It’s not uncommon for people to have debates on feminism. And let’s be honest, feminism as a subject has been a bone of contention between people for the longest time. More importantly, most people are either going overboard with feminism while others spend their time hating on it for no good reason. The sad reality is that most people don’t understand feminism as a concept. On the other, we, of course, have people hating on feminists and calling them “bra-burning feminists” like it’s a bad thing. In the latest episode of Hautesteppers 3.0, our favourite naari and trolls’ favourite too, Swara Bhasker opened up about feminism and pointed out how most people don’t get it. She added that in order to understand feminism, one has to understand patriarchy.

Speaking to Hauterrfly on episode 9 of Hautesteppers 3.0, Swara Bhasker shared that according to her people don’t understand feminism and are simply using the term. “I feel like nobody actually understands or knows what feminism is, maybe even I don’t. I think people are just using the term and it’s either cool or not cool. The ones who are cursing the feminists are unable to understand feminism and even the ones who call themselves feminists are unable to understand the concept of it all. I don’t know what’s going on. To understand what feminism is, let’s understand what patriarchy is. Patriarchy is a culture and an ideology that has treated women as less equal to men. And it has institutionalised gender inequality through thoughts, law, practice, culture, religion and several other ways. It has institutionalised it in every way. It has institutionalised gender inequality in our daily habits.

She does have a point, hai na? We’re all so busy chasing after our own versions and understanding of feminism that we’ve forgotten its true meaning. We’re with Swara Bhasker on this one. We all need to revise our lesson on feminism while understanding the deep-rooted patriarchy and how it has oppressed women since time immemorial.
