After A.R. Rahman, Oscar-Winning Filmmaker Guneet Monga Appointed BAFTA Breakthrough India Ambassador 2023

Indian filmmaker Guneet Monga made us all proud after she brought home an Oscar for her documentary short film The Elephant Whisperers this year. But this wasn’t her first one. Guneet Monga was the executive producer for the documentary short film Period. End of Sentence which won an Oscar in 2019. And now the filmmaker has gone and made us proud once again. Wondering what she did this time? Guneet Monga Kapoor has been appointed as the Breakthrough India Ambassador for 2023 by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts aka BAFTA.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has appointed the accomplished filmmaker and BAFTA nominee as the Breakthrough Indian Ambassador for 2023. Reacting to the same, Guneet Monga said that she is honoured to take on the role and follow in the footsteps of the ace singer A.R. Rahman and improve the profile of the new talents in the creative fields across the country. Speaking about the BAFTA Breakthrough campaign, the filmmaker said that as someone who has served as a jury member for it, she can confidently state that the program has aided several “outstanding independent Indian talents”. She revealed that she has witnessed the career growth and push that platforms like BAFTA and Netflix can give.

FYI, this is the third BAFTA Breakthrough program that is being conducted in India since 2020. Supported by Netflix, the program focuses on identifying, supporting and nurturing fresh talent in the Indian television, gaming and film industries. The program provides a grant to the successful applicants which allows them to seek international networking opportunities to grow further. From 2020 to 2022, the BAFTA Breakthrough Indian Ambassador was Oscar and Grammy-winning musical talent A.R. Rahman.
