Someone Pointed Out How ‘Gehraiyaan’ Poster Gives Credit To Intimacy Director. We Love That Indian Films Are Getting There!
Intimacy directors have been around for a while but it is only after #MeToo that film studios began opening up to the idea that they needed a designated and more importantly trained professional to choreograph and coordinate onscreen sex scenes. Then some marquee titles like Sex Education on Netflix were said to have used intimacy coordinators, which became a rising trend in Hollywood. However, for Bollywood, or shall we say, Indian films, the trend has been a slow one to catch up. But it has been a steady one. Just today, author Aseem Chhabra tweeted about how, what he believes was the first time, he saw an intimacy director getting due credit on a movie poster. The movie in question was Gehraiyaan, starring Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday and Dhairya Karwa, and directed by Shakun Batra.
Taking to his Twitter, Aseem Chhabra shared a screenshot of the poster of Shakun Batra’s Gehraiyaan, dropped today on Deepika’s birthday, and pointed out that he may have, for the very first time, seen an ‘intimacy director’ getting credit for an Indian film. The intimacy director for Gehraiyaan is writer, director Dar Gai, known for her acclaimed films like Three And a Half, and for writing and directing the music video for Prateek Kuhad’s ‘cold/mess’.
I could be wrong, but is it the first time I have seen a credit for an “Intimacy Director” in an Indian film (or any other film)? I know Dar Gai and am really curious about her contribution to this film. pic.twitter.com/eTCZ12hZly

Seeing his tweet, many Twitterati agreed with Aseem Chhabra on how most intimacy directors that are hired for films are not given their due credit. Some even said that giving credit to them is a trend in Hollywood and they are happy to see it happening in Bollywood as well. In fact, some also came out and spoke about how they weren’t even aware of such a role in the film industry but now know about it after seeing the Gehraiyaan poster.
only know of Sex Ed having an intimacy coach but this is v fascinating

I am sure other films also hire people who specialize in shooting intimate scenes. But I like that Dar actually got a credit for her work. Impressed with the production house giving credit where it’s due.

Concept of Hollywood taking late entry in Bollywood. I guess some male stars are equally uncomfortable as females when it comes to proper execution of an intimate scene.

This makes me so happy! It's one of my fav roles that we regularly have on the sets in NYC that I'm on – any time there's any chance of nudity or any mimed sexual touching. It's very encouraging to see Bollywood moving in this direction too!! Intimacy coordinators are the best 💕

Dar Gai is such a fabulous director. Some of music videos that she has made are so unique, so imaginative.. Stoked to see what she brings to the table.

Wow. Okay. I didn't know this was a thing but happy that the person got the credit.

Yes it’s certainly strange but very intriguing . Hope someone asks shakun about this in an interview or a round table if the film turns out to be good.

Honestly, having worked on so many films and not getting enough recognition must suck. But now that the credit is given by the production house of Gehraiyaan, I’m hoping that other production houses soon follow and give people the credit that they so rightfully deserve.
