It is a norm almost everywhere in the world that after marriage, the couple’s kids take on the children of their father. It is the man’s name that is carried forward by his wife and his children. But there are people who change these norms and take on their mother’s name as well. In the latest episode of The Male Feminist, actress Shweta Basu Prasad has revealed why she decided to add her mother’s maiden name to her own. She also revealed that she was in 9th standard when she made this decision! Isn’t that an empowering thing to do?
Shweta Basu Prasad on taking her mother’s maiden name
In a candid conversation with host Siddhaarth Aalambayan, Shweta Basu Prasad spoke about her family dynamics and what kind of relationship she shares with her younger brother. As a part of this dialogue, Shweta revealed that she has also added her mother’s maiden name to her own. She said that Basu is her nana and nani’s surname. Shweta also revealed that both her families were happy about her decision.
Talking about how young she was when she decided to do this, Shweta says, “I decided to do this when I was in 9th or 10th standard.” When asked why she decided to take on her mother’s maiden name, the 31-year-old actress said, “Well, I am close to both my families, closer to my mom’s family in terms of culture and language as well. This decision came way before my parents were separated.”
Taking on one’ mother’s maiden come is not commonly heard of in Indian society and despite that Shweta decided to do it when she was just a teenager, which shows how progressive she was even at that age.
