Exclusive: Hunkkaar Director Nitya Mehra, “Unfortunately R*pe Is An Epidemic In Our Country..

Hunkkaar is certainly one of the finest shows this year. Starring Aneet Padda in the lead, the six-episode series revolves around the r*pe crime committed by a Godman. The show effectively highlights the deep-rooted problems in our society that lead to such horrifying crimes against women. In a recent interview with the directors of Hunkkaar, Nitya Mehra and Karan D. Kapadia, we discussed why they chose Godman as the central subject of the show, and how the series sets itself apart from others in this genre. Their insights reflect the hard-hitting realities of today. Read our exclusive.

Nitya Mehra, Karan D. Kapadia On Hunkkaar’s Central Subject

There are many shows and films revolving around Godman and blind faith. I was curious to know the idea behind choosing this as the central subject for Hunkkaar and how the makers wanted to make it stand out in this genre. In an exclusive conversation, directors Nitya Mehra and Karan D Kapadia provided a deeper insight into this conversation. Nitya Mehra said, “I also feel like, look at the news, there’s not enough of it.” Karan D Kapadia added, “Not so many shows have been, or stories have been made.” Nitya continued, “Not enough, I feel, because at the end of the day, it’s unfortunately, r*pe is an epidemic in our country. I don’t think that no matter how many people tackle this subject, until things change, art is definitely a reflection of the times we live in. I guess it’s just organic that around you some filmmakers will pick up on what is happening in the country at the moment, and will probably see it in different forms and versions. The more we do, the better. ”

Karan D Kapadia said, “Hunkkaar came from the larger societal reflections that we wanted to delve into, which was our major theme, and it was blind faith. I think that was something that we wanted to explore as a theme, given our culture, and how strong religion is in our country. That was the genesis of where we wanted to root it in this world; it’s something that resonates in every home. We are all devotees of something.”
