K-pop group EPEX has made their highly anticipated comeback with their 7th mini album, Youth: Epilogue. The album portrays young people who, after navigating intense and imperfect moments, now stand at the cusp of a new beginning with renewed self-confidence. In an exclusive interview, the members opened up about embracing their unfiltered selves and the emotions they experience while writing such heartfelt lyrics.
EPEX Gets Real About Staying Unfiltered And Expressing Real Feelings In Their Music
1. Wish mentioned that you showed a totally new, unfiltered side of EPEX for this comeback. Was there a specific moment or conversation where you all realised you were ready to be this honest?
WISH: Now that it has been five years since our debut, I feel that their honest and unfiltered selves are even more charming when I look at EPEX from beside them.
BAEKSEUNG: While preparing this album, we talked a lot about showing ourselves as we are. Rather than trying to look perfect, we felt it would be more meaningful to honestly capture who we are right now. I think we also gained faith that our fans would connect with that side of us.
AYDEN: Since five years have passed, I don’t think it was one specific moment or conversation; rather, it feels like the honesty that comes with time naturally came out of us.
YEWANG: I think the moment I felt, “It’s okay to be honest,” came while watching our past videos. I noticed myself hesitating to show who I really am, and while monitoring those moments, I thought, “I want to show ZENITH my true self.”
2. Jeff, Baekseung, and Ayden, you all helped write the lyrics for ‘ECHO’. When you write about your real feelings, does it help you understand your emotions better, or does it make it harder to let them go?
BAEKSEUNG: Expressing my emotions through lyrics helps me look at my feelings more objectively. Of course, there are times when revisiting those emotions is difficult, but in the end, writing music gives me a chance to organize my thoughts and let them go.
AYDEN: When I write my emotions into lyrics, I find myself going back and reflecting on those words over and over again. Because of that, I think it actually becomes harder for me to let those feelings go.
JEFF: I think writing lyrics helps me express my emotions more honestly and naturally. It’s something I’ve been trying to get better at through music.
