Exclusive: Love Sex Aur Dhokha 2 Director Dibakar Banerjee: “Hope LSD 2 Makes Me And Ektaa Kapoor Rich”

With the release of Love Sex Aur Dhokha 2 in theatres today ie. April 19th, director Dibakar Banerjee shared his candid thoughts on what he hopes the film will achieve and the diverse takeaways he expects the audience to glean from it. Known for his nuanced storytelling and thought-provoking narratives, Dibakar and Ektaa Kapoor’s latest spiritual sequel which came after 14 years of the first film has already gained a lot of attention.

When asked about what were his expectations from the film, Dibakar said, “I don’t have many expectations, because I’ve just finished the film,” setting a tone of modesty and realism. “I think I have hopes that the film is a hit and it makes a lot of money and makes me and Ektaa (Kapoor) a little richer,” he quips, injecting a hint of humour into his outlook.

With a pragmatic approach, Dibakar acknowledges the practicalities of the film industry and works on a low-budget film, expressing, “Abhi itna tel nikla hai, thoda chahiye wapas. Thode paise chahiye! (transl. We’ve worked so hard, we hope to get some of it back” In the interview, Dibakar talked about the idea behind the film being narrative-driven, with the introduction of newer talent. The film Love Sex Aur Dhokha 2 is a three-segment film that shows three different, equally complex stories that drive the narrative.

Yet, beyond the realm of monetary aspirations, Banerjee delves into the thematic richness of Love Sex Aur Dhokha 2 and the myriad interpretations it may evoke among viewers. When asked about what the takeaway he hopes for the audience to have, he said, “I think everybody will take different things away”. “The three stories are such that different age groups will interact with the film differently. Different people will take different things away, it’s not just one thing. There are many things.”

Further into the conversation, Dibakar Banerjee talked about the cast of the film with leads, Paritosh Tiwari, Bonita Rajpurohit, and Abhinav Singh in each story. The film revolves around the topics of trans-visibility, transphobia and the representation of the LGBTQ+ community in India. The supporting cast including Mouni Roy, Urfi Javed and more drove the film ahead. Dibakar talked about Bonita Rajpuruhit who is the first trans-woman to play lead in a film. He talked about how Bonita added the necessary depth to the character.
