Exclusive: “Expecting Same Pay As The Hero Is Not Possible”: Nushrratt Bharuccha On Pay Disparity In Bollywood

The conversation around pay disparity in the film industry has been long lived. While many celebrities have often openly talked about the gender pay gap, some have remained tight lipped about the matter. And now sharing her thoughts on it is actress Nushrratt Bharuccha. The star sat down with us for an exclusive conversation around the discourse around pay parity in Bollywood, and her upcoming film–Chatrapathi.

When asked about pay disparity in the Hindi film industry, Bharuccha’s unfiltered opinion on the same was slightly different and more hard hitting than the rest. The actress mentioned–”My perspective in all of this, honestly is very real. I don’t talk around the bush. There’s only Varun Dhawan and one Sreenivas, who do this thing of putting the names of their female co-stars before them, and more. But there are a lot of other actors who don’t really give a shit. I can never talk about pay disparity, because the fact of the matter is this business runs on making money.”

Unlike most actors, Bharuccha further mentioned that filmmaking is a business and nobody makes a film for losses. Be it a male or a female actor, the one in whose name the ticket sells, will ask for that money.

She also added–”I mean, Raazi did so much money, that’s why Alia Bhatt became what she is today, right? Like she had a certain price to ask from the people who were mounting larger films on her. The economics of it makes sense. You can’t take away economics just to talk about the pay disparity. Pay disparity comes when the economics are there, where the female-centric films are also making money, but the producers are not giving them the buck. Then you talk about it.”

Talking about the current scenario in Bollywood, Nushrratt added– “We will have to accept the reality. You set a certain budget in the name of a hero, and half of it is set up in my name. So, I cannot expect the same pay as the hero. It’s not possible. It’s not logical. So, I’m very realistic like that. My head is not in some fifth Cloud, and I’m very new. So, if you ask me, the price I was getting paid for earlier films to what I’m getting paid now is much, much more in my career and my payment has gone up substantially. I’m no one to complain. I’m very happy where I am, there’s no problem.”

Bharuccha’s interesting approach actually puts a realistic perspective to the entire discourse. But all we hope to see is a bigger change in the scene. On the professional front, Nushrratt will be seen sharing screen space with actor Sreenivas, who will be making his Bollywood debut with the remake of Prabhas’ popular film–Chatrapathi.
