There has been a lot of discussion about the harmful side of K-pop fan groups. It became stronger after news of one ENHYPEN fan’s death because of online attacks surfaced. Reports say Mina Chan, a 26-year-old Japanese person living in South Korea, took her own life during a livestream on August 5. Her death came after some of the group’s fans strongly criticised her over something that happened in the United States.

The problem began at an ENHYPEN show in the United States. Mina tried to have member Sunoo pass a sunflower to Ni-ki. The plan did not succeed as she wanted. Later Ni-ki talked in a livestream about people in the crowd who cared more about catching the members’ attention than about the performance itself. He called that behaviour disappointing. Ni-ki did not mention any name. Even so, many fans decided his words were aimed at Mina.
As the talk about the livestream spread, large numbers of people sent mean and angry messages to Mina on her social media pages. She posted a public apology note and said she would close her fan site. Still, the online attacks didn’t stop, and on August 5, she died during a livestream.
News of her death shocked many. Some people then turned their anger toward Ni-ki. They wrote rude things about him. That reaction is hard to accept because the K-pop idol never pointed to any single person. The belief that he talked about Mina came only from fan speculation. So, blaming someone on guesses is not fair. It is easy to picture the heavy weight he may now feel.

Many people hope Mina finds peace. At the same time they hope fan groups can become a gentler place. Kind words and careful nature can make a real difference for everyone involved.
