Did You Know ‘Wakanda Forever’ Director Ryan Coogler Has Worked Only With Female DPs?

On Saturday, the first teaser trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was shown at the San Diego Comic-Con. The Ryan Coogler-directed film’s first peek reveals a significant rewrite of the script and plot. And while there was a lot about the trailer that has me hooked, I simply could not get over the grand and detailed cinematography of the trailer. And all of it should be credited to Autumn Durald Arkapaw, the cinematographer of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Moreover, a tweet pointed out a fun fact that director Ryan Coogler has only worked with female cinematographers. We love him!
Ryan Coogler has only worked with female cinematographers for all his feature films, which is a dope fun fact.

Autumn Durald Arkapaw took over after Rachel Morrison, a longtime Coogler collaborator who worked on the first film, Black Panther. Not only that but did you know that Autumn also worked on Loki as director of photography? In addition to Loki, Gia Coppola and Durald worked together on the movies Palo Alto and Mainstream, starring Andrew Garfield and Maya Hawke. Additionally, she contributed to the films Untogether by Emma Forrest, Teen Spirit by Max Minghella, and The Sun Is Also A Star by Ry Russo-Young. Additionally, she has worked on music videos with Travis Scott, the Weeknd, and SZA.

Reports state that Morrison was supposed to return as a cinematographer for the film Flint Strong, starring Ryan Destiny, Ice Cube, and Judy Greer and based on Claressa Shields’ preparation for the 2012 London Olympics, but she was unable to do so because of the COVID-19 pandemic that caused scheduling issues and numerous delays. She spoke in an interview about the catastrophic consequences of killing Flint Strong during COVID and how she would be unable to take part in the filming of Wakanda Forever.
