“I Was Shattered”: Anusha Dandekar On Facing Racism In The Country She Grew Up

Racism has plagued the world, and no matter how much we deny it, it still exists in society. And nobody can tell it better than the ones who have actually faced it in their life. In the recent episode of Hauterrfly’s The Male Feminist, famous video jockey and actress, Anusha Dandekar opened up about facing racism in Australia when she worked with MTV as a VJ. The actress talked at length about the racist behaviour she faced from a shop owner, that too in the country where she was born and raised.

The latest episode of Hauterrfly’s The Male Feminist dropped on May 17, Wednesday and the well-known Radio jockey Anusha Dandekar had a fun chat about her life, career and relationships with the host Siddhaarth Aalambayan. The actress also shed some light on an event when she faced racism in Australia, the country where she was born and raised in. On being asked about her thoughts on racism, Anusha Dandekar shared about the time when she went back to Australia and started working with MTV as a video jockey. Once, while she was out shopping with her girlfriend and was very excited about being in her home country was the time when Anusha Dandekar also faced the shock of experiencing racism.

Anusha further revealed that while the shopkeeper was helping her friend who was white, he kept ignoring her. In fact, when Anusha asked him to show them a pair of sunglasses, the owner asked her about her nationality and then passed a demeaning comment by saying she could not afford that expensive product.

As per Anusha, this was the first time when faced racism in Australia. “I immediately asked my friend to keep the sunglasses and leave,” added Anusha Dandekar. On knowing about the incident, her friend wanted to go back and bash the shopkeeper too!

It’s sad how people decide whether somebody is monetarily strong or not based on their colour and nationality. This kind of thinking should never be entertained and in fact, be called out at the same time.
