A Love Other Than Yours: Netizens Blame Ahn Eun-jin’s Looks For Poor Ratings. Double Standards?

Every now and then, the entertainment industry reminds everyone of its double standards, and honestly, it is getting exhausting. The latest person caught in the middle is Ahn Eun Jin, who is facing criticism over her appearance in A Love Other Than Yours. Some viewers are blaming the drama’s poor performance because apparently, she looks older than her co-star, Seo Kang-joon.

According to Pannchoa, some have criticised the casting of Ahn Eun Jin and Seo Kang-joon and claim that the two do not look convincing as romantic partners. Some online users have even compared their appearance to that of an aunt and her nephew and made unnecessary comments about the actress looking older than her co-star.

While viewers are entitled to their opinions about a show’s story, direction, casting and performances, targeting an actress’s appearance is an entirely different matter. A drama can have several shortcomings, but blaming one woman simply because she looks “older” than the male lead is not at all fair.

The entertainment industry has a frustrating double standard. When a drama succeeds, male leads are often celebrated for their performance and screen presence. But when a show struggles, female actors quickly become targets of criticism.

Why Is It Always Women Who Get Blamed?

This situation shows a frustrating pattern in the entertainment industry. When a drama succeeds, the male lead is often celebrated for his performance, popularity and screen presence. However, when a show fails to meet expectations, female actors can quickly become the easiest targets for criticism.

A show’s performance depends on several factors. Reducing all of that to one actress’s appearance makes little sense. Ahn Eun Jin deserves to be judged on her acting, not on whether she fits someone’s expectations of how a female lead should look.

Another major problem is that women in the entertainment industry are constantly expected to look young, beautiful and perfect. Meanwhile, similar scrutiny is not always directed at men.

Perhaps it is time audiences stopped holding women responsible for every disappointment in the entertainment industry.
