5 Reasons ‘Makdee’ Still Remains The Scariest Movie From Our Childhood. No. 1 Ia Shabana Azmi, Of Course!

We all remember Makdee, starring Shweta Basu Prasad and Shabana Azmi, don’t we? It was the first horror movie that I ever gathered the guts to watch. It gave me nightmares about the ‘chudail’ for months. It was insanely scary! But I also subconsciously absorbed some moral lessons from the film. This 2002 Vishal Bharadwaj film may have failed to impress the critics, but it turned into a cult movie nonetheless and it sure as hell left its intended audience, the children, thoroughly spooked and entertained. I still remember when the movie came into the theatres it was a huge deal, everyone in my school was talking about it and the one thing that everyone agreed upon after watching it was how spooky Makdee was to them.

It’s been 20 years since this masterpiece was released and I gathered the guts to watch the movie again, recently. And guess what? It still scared the shit out of me! There are definitely some really spooky elements in the movie which, being a horror movie enthusiast, would usually just make me laugh. But I’m sure that Makdee will undoubtedly, haunt me forever. At the same time, it is one of the most entertaining movies from our childhood. From catchy songs like ‘O papad wale’ to funny pranks by Shweta’s Chunni, it has everything!

5 Reasons Why Makdee Still Remains The Scariest Movie From Our Childhood

1. The Haunted Mansion Was Iconic

In the movie, we learn about the age-old legend related to the mansion, that anyone who enters it will return as an animal. This definitely made me fear the haveli and any others that looked like it, in real life. I know it’s not just me. But, on top of this, the picturisation of the mansion is such that it will literally give you chills.

2. Shabana Azmi As A 500-Year-Old Witch Is The Stuff Of Nightmares!

I remember when I first saw the witch in the movie, I literally had to cover my eyes. Her greenish witchy makeup with those long nails, the look gave me nightmares. She was the only witch I knew before Hermione Granger who was able to totally change the idea of a witch for my innocent mind. Remember when she drinks the grape juice pretending it was blood? That was a scary scene!

3. The Lesson About The Consequences

This definitely was the scariest of all because this was the thing which I could relate to the most. It was fun enjoying Chunni’s mischief and her pranking everyone in the village, but when it all backfires because of Chunni’s pranks, Munni is captured by the witch, which was very unnerving for me. Plus, no one in the village believes her or helps her. This definitely gave me a lesson about having fun at the expense of others.

4. The Witch Turned Munni Into A Hen!

This was a genuinely scarring moment for a lot of people. When the legend of the mansion comes true and Munni who had entered the mansion, did in fact, turn into an animal, it was scary as hell, You know, it’s one thing to hear about something superstitious but just so much scarier if it turns out to be true. But I’ve always admired the Chunni for still going in there to rescue her sister.

5 Animal Sacrifice Was Another Angle That Shook Us

When Chunni met the witch, she cracked a horrific deal with her to save her sister’s life. The witch said she will return Munni back to a human only if Chunni arranges for a hundred hens in exchange. This was such a big task for a little girl. But at that moment we think that is the only way Chunni can get her sister back. The fact that she wanted to kill those hens was crazy.

This remarkable movie, apart from scaring the bejeezus out of me, also taught me to not blindly believe in things, that our actions have consequences, and that we should not let fear or mistakes restrict us from having fun and enjoying life. But most importantly, it was a beautiful celebration of siblings and their true love. I can never truly forget Makdee. Can you?
