Gloria Steinem, the woman who helped bring feminism into the mainstream when the movement was still widely dismissed, has sadly passed away at the age of 92 in September. Born in Ohio, her early experiences shaped her personality, and she went on to become one of the most recognisable voices in the early feminist movement. Her death has reminded us to look back at her contribution towards helping women get rights. Many know that she stood up for women, but do you know what exactly she fought against? Read on to find out.
What Did Gloria Steinem Fight For?
1. Gender Equality
Gloria Steinem fought hard against the idea that women should be confined to kitchens. Not just that, she also openly spoke about workplace discrimination and how women were given limited assignments, pushing for women to have the same opportunities and choices as men.
2. My Body, My Choice
The conversation around reproductive rights is still ongoing, but Gloria Steinem was one of the pioneers who refused to let it stay a taboo. She never hesitated to openly speak about abortion access and a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body, helping bring “reproductive freedom” into mainstream feminist conversations.

3. Fight Against Racism
She didn’t see feminism as a fight that was separate from racism, as it was not limited to gender. For her, speaking out against racism was as important as other subjects. She openly pushed the idea that women of all races had a voice.
4. Women In Politics
For Gloria, one thing was clear: feminism also meant that women deserved positions where they could make decisions. Having mentioned this, it’s worth noting that she co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus. Her aim was to encourage and support more women in politics and public office.
Gloria’s contribution to feminism should be remembered and acknowledged. She firmly discussed the issues that many were uncomfortable talking about. We thank Gloria Steinem for her immense contribution, as her work gave women the courage to speak up, challenge patriarchy and believe in equality.
